“This job would really suck if I could not get up in the morning thinking that I could do a better job today than I did yesterday.” That was virtually the first sentence of the first lecture at the PAN Pacific Veterinary Conference in Brisbane recently.
It was uttered by Professor Dean Richardson, an equine surgeon, but it would apply to all facets of veterinary science.
Veterinarians are trained first of all to question things and so paradigm shifts should not be too difficult with progressive knowledge and technology advances.
The old adage about an idea whose time has come applies to many breakthroughs in veterinary thinking and two of these are detailed inside this newsletter.
It should not take too much of a mindset shift for dairy practitioners to embrace the new C-Section sutures, offering strength and pliability and more consistency than any brand of catgut suture can provide.
A major change of thought processes is the concept of the SISAAB, single injection short acting antibiotics, which are

designed to overtake the dependence on long acting antibiotics and their attendant deleterious effects on both natural flora and resistance patterns.
Marbocyl S is the very first antibiotic registered in New Zealand for this use.
Just as the man on the TV set says, when talking of cleaning concrete paths, “Apply and walk away.” It is now well accepted that NSAIDs greatly aid recovery of many disease processes, especially infectious ones such as pneumonia.
Now that the practitioner has such a valuable tool as the single shot short acting antibiotic there is an
obvious need for an NSAID to have a long duration of action.
Tolfedine can claim over 72 hours at site of inflammation and certainly is the only one with 48 hours therapeutic blood levels.
Thus it is the perfect adjunct to Marbocyl S, and is from the same fine Vétoquinol stable.
