The general line people often say with surprise in their voices is “Christmas is just around the corner,” however when one thinks of time flying it is staggering to think that the dramatic outbreak of equine ‘flu in Australia is now over 3 months old.

In that time this disease has assumed a prominence in many a discussion on animal health, biosecurity and the racing industry.

Thankfully containment has worked so far and racing was due to resume in New South Wales on December 1 but there were many demands for New Zealand to vaccinate pre-emptively for the sake of our racing industry.

However the issue was open to debate and cool heads prevailed in the short term. Inside there is a look at some of the issues involved in this very topical subject.
