Details
Ingredients:
Each ml contains 50mg Phenylpropanolamine Hydrochloride BP.
Pharmacology:
Phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride is a sympathomimetic agent; it is an analogue of the endogenous sympathomimetic amines.
Pharmacodynamic Properties
Phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride has weak sympathomimetic activity and produces a wide range of pharmacological effect. It appears to be most effective in the treatment of urinary incontinence in dogs caused by urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence, theoretically by improving tone.
Efficacy:
Urinary incontinence in spayed bitches has been a matter of concern to many New Zealand veterinarians.
Long term oestrogen therapy is not recommended for the dog because of erythropoietic toxicity (Booth and McDonald Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, page 603).
Indications:
Phenylpropanolamine is a sympathomimetic agent which acts by direct stimulation of the smooth muscle of the internal urethral sphincter. It is indicated in the management of urinary incontinence associated with urethral sphincter incompetence in the bitch.
Dosage and Administration:
The recommended dose of phenylpropanolamine is 1.5mg/kgl bodyweight twice daily. This dosage is achieved by incorporating three drops of Propalin Syrup per 4kg bodyweight in the feed. Alternatively, 1mg/kg bodyweight may be given three times daily by incorporating one drop of Propalin Syrup per 2kg bodyweight in the feed.
Contraindications:
Not for use in pregnant animals.
DO NOT USE IN ANIMALS BEING TREATED WITH OTHER HYPERTENSIVE DRUGS.
Side Effects:
Aggressiveness and restlessness have been noted in some animals following treatment.
Use of the product may not be fully effective in all treated animals.
Sympathomimetics may produce a wide range of effects, most of which mimic the results of excessive stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system. Headache, hypertension and dizziness have been reported in man.
Propalin Syrup contains sorbitol which has laxative properties.
However, such activity is unlikely at the recommended dose.
Store in a dry place below 25°C
